Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Trumpet Competition – Washington, DC – Thursday October 23, and Friday, October 24, 1997

Press Release and Printed Program. Art Farmer was one of the judges at this prestigious competition. Judging took place on October 23 in the afternoon at the Kennedy Center narrowing the list from 15 trumpeters to 5. Then in a concert on Friday, October 24, the 5 finalists vied for first position and a grand scholarship prize of $20,000. “At stake is over $60,000 in scholarships and prizes, and exposure to the international jazz industry.” Winners were: 1st Place: Darren Barrett, Canada; 2nd Place: Diego Urcola, Argentina; 3rd Place Avishai Cohen, Israel; Finalists: Matt Shulman, Vermont; and John Sneider, Massachusetts.
