Art Farmer Issued Recordings as Leader or Featured Artist (Recorded Outside USA)

The table below summarizes the commercially released albums with Art Farmer as leader, co-leader or featured artist recorded outside of the United States. As can be seen, starting in 1953, Farmer recorded with a wide variety of artists, some internationally recognized and others best known within their own country or region.

The “European” Quintet that he ultimately assembled was made up of saxophonist Harry Sokal (Austria, b.1954), pianist Fritz Pauer (Austria, 1943-2012), bassist Paulo Cardoso (Brazil, 1953-2018) and drummer Mario Gonzi (Austria, b. 1966). It is this ensemble that is present on the 1998 CD, Art Farmer Quintet Live at Jazzland. Jazzland, located in Vienna, where Farmer lived for three decades, is one of Europe’s most enduring clubs, still going strong after 50 years.

In 2016, Sokal recorded a tribute to Farmer issued as I Remember Art on the Austrian Alessa label. This CD was nominated for a German Record Critics Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik).

Of course, Farmer often crossed paths with other American artists either ex-patriots or those just touring including saxophonists Jimmy Heath, Phil Woods, Jackie McLean, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz and Bennie Wallace, trombonists Slide Hampton and Bob Brookmeyer and pianist Hank Jones. For further information on these recordings, see the Discography.
