Addison Farmer Discography

Art Farmer’s twin brother, bassist Addison actually was the first of the two to record. His career began in West Coast blues bands such as that of vocalist/trumpeter Monte Easter, but he soon was involved with some of the giants of bebop including Charlie Parker and Howard McGhee who were part of the Los Angeles Central Avenue scene in the mid- to late-1940s.

By the early 1950s, Addison had relocated to New York City where he and Art became prominent contributors to that vibrant jazz milieu. The twins often recorded together and were members of the original Jazztet.

From 1957 until his untimely death in 1963, Addison mainly recorded with vibraphonist Teddy Charles, pianists Mal Waldron and Mose Allison. He is present on some of the seminal sessions of those artists.

This discography includes ALL the sessions on which Addison is present, so please be aware that there is considerable overlap with parts 1 and 2 of Art’s discography.

According to the liner notes for Blue Moon 6053, Sterling 106 (“St. Louis Blues,” “Time for Jookin’”), featuring vocalist Judy Canova, does NOT involve the Monte Easter band despite the information shown in many sources.

In 1947 and 1948, Dean Benedetti recorded Charlie Parker live using equipment available at the time. The recordings were ONLY of Parker’s solos, so what is present in this box set are a large number of fragments of performances. Those with Addison Farmer (under Howard McGhee’s leadership} were recorded during the first half of March 1947. The track identification is arcane and will not be reproduced here.

The liner notes to Night Train 7021 place track a in another session in 1949, on which Art Farmer was not present. The Lord discography indicates it is part of this session. Swing Time 148 definitely contains a version of “Black Train Blues” but I can’t confirm it’s the same one as on the Night Train CD.

The ensemble is basically Jay McShann’s band at the time with Pete Johnson on piano. Why the matrix numbers have gaps is unknown. The Lord discography indicates that track a (but not track i) was recorded at a separate session. The recording date shown is found in the Lord discography and the liner notes to Classics CD 1094 but Arhoolie CD 333 indicates only 1948/1949. The master take of “B & O Blues” is apparently the shorter (faster tempo) version although Down Beat/Swing Time 152 has not been auditioned to confirm this. The liner notes to Arhoolie F 1012, which includes the shorter version, state: “An alternate master of B & O Blues can be heard on the album R 2004: Jumpin’ the Blues by Joe Turner and Pete Johnson.” The version on Arhoolie R 2004 and CD 333 is the longer one.

According to the Bob Gordon Discography, Gordon is the baritone saxophonist and not Ortega. That source also indicates this session took place in Spring of 1949. The information shown comes from Roy Porter’s autobiography, “There and Back.” It is uncertain whether tracks a and b were ever issued. All of the Knockout masters were destroyed in a fire, according to Porter. This session took place after a serious automobile accident that took place when the band was traveling through New Mexico injuring Porter, Farmer and Clyde Dunn, all of whom required hospitalization and extended recovery.

Most sources indicate this session was recorded in 1961; however, the Herald LP was issued in 1956 and the session mentioned in DownBeat Magazine, Dec. 14, 1955, p. 7.

Ortega uses multi tracking on several of the performances, often simulating a saxophone or woodwind section. The instrument assignments shown above are a best guess.

This session was originally released as half of a 16 rpm LP. Teddy Charles was the supervisor and presumably arranged all of his compositions. Similarly, Torrie Zito most likely arranged his two compositions and Amram, “Five Spot.”

On the OJC CD reissue, the liner notes and back cover have "Lyriste" and "Five Spot" interchanged. "Lyriste" is the 4th track on the CD, not the 5th.

This recording date is taken from the 2000 Rhino CD reissue liner notes which incorrectly indicate the location as Hollywood. Other discographical sources indicate that this session was recorded in late 1958.

The uncredited pianist heard comping on tracks a and e is most likely Brookmeyer while that on track d is probably Charles. Both played (and recorded on) piano even though it was not their main instrument.

The personnel given for the tracks on this session on the liner notes to Bethlehem 6058 and in discographies are collective. Although not indicated previously, it seems most likely that the album Betty Blake Sings In a Tender Mood was the result of at least 2 recording sessions as shown here. The personnel assignments are best guesses based on auditioning the recording. Teddy Charles was producer and musical director of this session. There are no solos by members of the accompanying ensemble. The Fresh Sound 2014 CD reissue indicates that the tracks were recorded in 1961.

This is an instructional LP designed for teaching wire brush technique on the snare drum and, unfortunately, has not been auditioned. The track titles listed are those given on the LP that appear to involve the trio. (There are actually 24 tracks on the album, most of which seem to be demonstrations of rhythmic patterns using wire brushes.) The Jazz Discography (Lord), however, lists the following standards as comprising the contents of the album: “Oh, Lady Be Good,” “Take the "A" Train,” “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “It's Only a Paper Moon,” “September in the Rain,” “St. Louis Blues,” “I Remember You” and “All God's Chillun Got Rhythm.” This can only be sorted out when I am able to listen to the LP.

The personnel is troubling because the ensemble that performed at Newport on June 30, 1960 included Kiane Zawadi (Bernard McKinney) on trombone and euphonium. Earlier in the year, Curtis Fuller was the trombonist and McCoy Tyner the pianist. Head on Fire CD HOF 72 indicates that Fuller is the trombonist who is also announced at the beginning of the performance. The pianist is not announced and could possibly be Tyner.

Booker Little (t) on a-b, d, f-g; Booker Ervin (ts) on a-b, d, f-g; Mal Waldron (p) on a-b, d-g.

Many reissues of this concert (under Booker Little - Booker Ervin, not Teddy Charles) contain edited versions of "Scoochie" (5:20; vibraphone solo deleted), "Cycles" (4:46; vibraphone solo deleted), "The Confined Few" (6:52; vibraphone solo deleted) and "Blues De Tambour" (3:39; drum solo deleted). The timings listed above, which include applause, represent the actual performances and not the edited versions. The Fresh Sound CD reissue includes Charles' spoken introductions.

Track c is performed only by Charles, Farmer and Shaugnessy. Track e is performed only by Charles and the rhythm section. As can be seen, these two tracks have been reissued less frequently than the other titles.

Soloists:
Track a - Shaughnessy (intro), Little, Charles, Ervin, Waldron
Track b - Charles, Waldron, Little, Ervin, Farmer
Track c - Charles
Track d - Shaughnessy (intro), Little, Waldron, Shaughnessy
Track e - Waldron, Charles, Farmer, Charles, Waldron, Charles/Shaughnessy (4-bar exchanges)
Track f - Ervin, Charles, Waldron, Farmer, Little
Track g - Ervin, Charles
