This ambitious and unusual work involves a full orchestra and chorus made up of both classical and jazz luminaries from 19 nationalities and 11 religious denominations performing music with lyrics taken from the poems of Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II). The liner notes indicate that it took three years for the music and lyrics to be assembled. Gene Lees was instrumental in translating the poetry. Arrangements and orchestrations are by Francy Boland. Lalo Schifrin is the conductor.

The live performances were televised (WDR TV) and can be viewed in part on YouTube. Most of the issues contain music from the June 30, 1984 concert.

The suite is in two parts and soloists are as follows:
Movement 1 - Tony Coe (ts), Sal Nistico (ts), Gianni Basso (ts), Sahib Shihab (ss), Bobby Scott (p), Benny Bailey (t), Ferdinand Povel (as), Sarah Vaughan (v), Bernard Ighner (v)
Movement 2 - Benny Bailey (t), Bobby Scott (p), Fats Sadi (vib), Rolf Ericsson (t), Idrees Sulieman (t), Klaus Osterloh (t), Art Farmer (t), Sarah Vaughan (v) , Bernard Ighner (v)

Track g is listed as “How Do We Say Auf Wiedersehen.” Some sources, including this album, indicate Bud Powell as the composer of track i. The timings found on the CD (and presumably the LP which has not been examined) are not accurate. Four more titles were recorded on January 7, 1988 but Art Farmer is not present on that session.

Tracks n and o are Wentzel/Kapstad duets.

These performances were filmed for the ZDF Jazz Club series. According to Jazz on the Screen, Art Farmer is also present on “It’s You or No One” and “Teach Me Tonight” but it is uncertain whether those titles were recorded on this date or in April 1988, and they have not been auditioned. Farmer and Benny Bailey are listed as guests. These titles and many more appear to have been issued on a commercial double DVD set, but very little information about it could be found including the label. They can be viewed on YouTube: track a, track b.

On track a, the band also plays “Ornithology” which is based not the chord sequence of “How High the Moon.”

The timings shown do not include announcements or applause.

Art Farmer (t) on a, c-d, f-g, (fh) on b, e.

Solos:
a - Art Farmer (t); Cedar Walton (p); Ron Carter (b); Art Farmer (t) 4-bar exchanges with Higgins
b - Art Farmer (fh); Cedar Walton (p)
c - Cedar Walton (p); Art Farmer (t); Billy Higgins (d) to errant splice

f - Cedar Walton (p) intro; Cedar Walton (p); Art Farmer (t); Ron Carter (b); Art Farmer (t); Cedar Walton (p); Art Farmer (t); Ron Carter (b) coda vamp
g - Art Farmer (t); Cedar Walton (p); Ron Carter (b)

This video contains two faulty splices:
Track c - During the drum solo, the video cuts to the last chorus of the theme, “It’s About Time.” The timing shown is that to the end of the audible drum solo.
Track e - Just as Farmer is beginning his solo, a crude splice cuts to a Farmer solo NOT from this track (not even in 3/4)! So Farmer’s solo on this title is never heard or seen on the video. Therefore, this track has been designated as incomplete. The time shown for this track does not include the misplaced flugelhorn solo. The actual time of the track on the DVD is 7:27.

The timings shown do not include applause or announcements. The DVD shows snippets of the quartet rehearsing for the appearance.

No recording date is provided other than the year, 1990. The trio of Walton, Carter and Higgins performed at Sweet Basil in February of that year (New York Times ads, Feb. 9 and 16, 1990) and the scenes of the band arriving at the club show them wearing coats consistent with cold weather. It seems most likely that it was around this time that Farmer joined the trio for this filming.
