This is a mysterious session issued with Art Farmer as the sole leader; however, it seems much more likely that he was a guest artist with European musicians. Personnel given on the issues, the Lord Discography and other sources are incorrect and strangely include Ernie Royal (t), Jimmy Cleveland (tb), Oscar Estelle (as, bar), Harold Mabern (p) and Roy McCurdy (d). The information displayed here comes from Peter Losin and seems reasonable. The timings shown do not include the obviously dubbed in applause. Some sources indicate that Farmer composed tracks b and e but this seems unlikely. Track e is basically free improvisation and Losin credits Kleinschuster as the composer of b.

Tracks d, e and h have not been auditioned. On the copy of JRC 11434 that I auditioned, the disc labels were reversed. On the JRC and Groove Note issues, track a is called “On the Beach” but on Elec KV 201, it’s listed as “Birthday for Jacquet.” On the JRC and Groove Note issues, track c is called “Birthday Party Blues” but on Elec KV 201, it’s listed as “Blues for Kenny.”

The composer of track h needs confirmation.

Despite the Newport Jazz Festival reference, these are not live recordings but appear to be a jam session taking place in a recording studio.

This is Ella Fitzgerald backed by her quartet and members of Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass, in a studio setting. The DVD contains several other performances by Fitzgerald backed by her accompanists but not the big band ("I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "C-Jam Blues" (with Roy Eldridge and Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis), "The Man I love," "Mr. Paganini," "How High the Moon" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You").

These performances can be viewed on YouTube: Track a, track b.

This is "The Jazz Gala Big Band Orchestra," directed by Peter Herbolzheimer, with special guests. The exact dates of the performances are not know but all seem to have taken place in the same venue. Some sources indicate Hannover as the location for some of the tracks. Herbolzheimer and Toots Thielemans act as MCs.

The timings shown do not include announcements or applause. The tracks come from two "concerts" televised by ZDF (Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen). These are probably tracks assembled for broadcast rather than complete video recordings of the live concerts as they actually occurred. Tracks a-l comprise the 1st "concert" and m-s, the 2nd, which has more performances than are indicated here (including two Thielemans guitar solos that end the DVD I viewed). The TV broadcasts of both "concerts" begin with the same performance of "Blues In My Shoes" that includes introductions of the band personnel. This is also the issued version except that on the issues, Johnny Griffin's second solo chorus and the repeat ending have been deleted.

It should be noted that several more of the issued performances are edited. The edited timings are shown in parentheses. Track o is not the version of "Times Lie" issued on Atlantic SD 1693 and the latter is not an edited version of track o. There appear to be two takes of this title (see next session).

Track l is a series of solos ending with the "Blues In My Shoes" shout choruses.

Part of one of the concerts (identified as ZDF-TV, Wiesbaden, Jan. 23, 1976; “Festive Minor,” “Blues in My Shoes”) can be viewed on YouTube.
